NAIDOC Week 2020

Welcome back! We have so much as a community to now celebrate. We are finally out of lockdown, the weather has warmed up and our students are back. We have so much to be grateful for. Our students have settled back in really well. This shows just how resilient our children are. It is so good to see them laughing and playing with their friends.

Last week we celebrated alongside our Indigenous friends for NAIDOC Week. It is so important for our children to listen and understand the stories of Indigenous Australia. We cannot truly understand our country's history or who we are as a nation until we do this. The oldest living culture in the world! That is truly something to be proud of.. Our students engaged in a variety of activities to celebrate throughout the week.

Next year in Term 1, all our students will delve much deeper into Civics and Citizenship - Democracy and Multiculturalism Studies. It is important that our students understand their world and as they get older, their beliefs and perceptions. This is why the Victorian Curriculum covers such areas progressively over both the primary and secondary years of schooling.

Friday saw some light relief with our CRAZY HAIR DAY. Everyone did a great job and there were some simply amazing hairdos!

I would like to thank everyone for all your patience with moving on to online Parent/Teacher Interviews. It has not been easy I know. Regardless of how well you are set up, there is always an occasional glitch with technology and we have to revert back to the phone. Hopefully these restrictions may be lifted next year and we can welcome back our parents/ carers' back to school. I guess, we will all have to just wait and see.

Our Benchmarking Assessment in both Reading Comprehension and in Mathematics is now complete. We have been busy analyzing everyone's results. As expected, some students have fallen behind during remote learning. For next year in 2021 the Victorian Government has given us some supplementary funding to hire another teacher part-time for 6 months. She/he will work alongside our other teachers to teach in smaller groups to really target our students at their point of need.

We will be dividing the school into 2 Learning Communities. A Prep -Year 2 and a Year 3 -year 6. This will allow students who need extension to work beside older students at their level, whilst also allowing us to cater explicitly for our students who have fallen behind.

All our parents/carers will receive a Term Overview of subjects for Term 1, 2020 as well as a term's worth of Individual Learning Goals in the first few weeks of term 1, 2021. The other change for next year is a physical one, which will see the senior kids move to the BER and the junior students coming over to the admin building. This will give the older students more room to spread out in the newer building and make the most of the learning spaces.

We have a lot of fun activities planned for the school in Term 1 (Covid permitting). Unfortunately we are still waiting on confirmation about swimming (we should hear soon) and whether we have been successful in our application for a School Sporting Grant for Cricket (which will see every student being coached for 5 sessions over 5 weeks) by an outside Cricket Association. We know the students will love it!

Our 2021 Prep Transition Program - Stepping Stones has begun. It is so lovely to meet these little 4 year old people. Every year they come in so wide-eyed and curious.

We love welcoming new families into our school community and hopefully next year, we will be allowed to hold some community events at school

Lastly, our grass on our oval is very long. it was only cut 3 .5 weeks ago. The gardeners are coming back to cut it this Monday. We are monitoring the weather as the next couple of days will be warm. Thank you to everyone for sending your child with a school hat. This is the best term so far in the number of children who are wearing them and keeping safe from the sun. School Council has just recently updated our Sunsmart Policy. There is a copy on our Website.

As bookings and dates fall into place, we will notify you via Compass and through our Blog.

For now take care
