Norris Bank Primary School provides a developmentally appropriate Camping Program from Prep to Year 6. The activities which students participate in during the Camping Program support learning within the framework of the AUSVELS curriculum.
Prep: Our Prep students commence their introduction to the Camping Program by coming along early one morning for breakfast at school. It’s a fun activity where they learn about sharing a communal meal with their teachers and friends.
Years 1 and 2: Our students in Years 1 and 2 come along to school for a late afternoon/evening of games and a meal together. After the meal the Year 1 students are picked up by their parents and the Year 2 students stay on for a night ‘sleepover’ at the school, followed by breakfast in the morning. Then there are some more games before the students are collected by their parents.
Years 3 and 4: In Years 3 and 4, the students participate in a Camping Program with an Outdoor Education focus. The school uses two different sites, Waratah Beach Camp and Gundiwindi Lodge, on alternate years. The Year 3/4 Camp is conducted over three days, with two nights away.
Years 5 and 6: The Year 5/6 Camp is a longer program, usually with the students being away for 4-5 days. The format is that of an educational tour related to the integrated inquiry unit being studied that year. While the programs are built around the students visiting relevant places, they also participate in a wide range of outdoor activities. In 2016 the Year 5/6 students will travel to Canberra to visit a range of significant national places. In 2015 the students emjoyed learning more about the history of Australia when they visited Beechworth in the Victorian Goldfields region for four days in April.
